Even Earwig and the Witch, a CGI film, had this analogue 35mm filter. The film was animated digitally in 2K, yes, but Studio Ghibli and Studio Ponoc have this special process when transferring their digital films for a digital cinema release or home video: they apply artificial film grain and gate weave to the films to look like older 35mm films.
Studio Ponoc’s Mary and the Witch’s Flower is probably my best argument as to how a 4K upscale can enhance a 2K film.
